Around the Island Adventures with Harry!

Sun 7th July 2024

Yesterday Harry took Explorer and 12 happy customers on our 'Around Anglesey' Explorer Trip. Check out what they saw, and where they went below!

Leaving St. George’s Pier at 10:00, we set out through the Swellies, aiming for the southern exit of the Menai Strait. The journey was graced with lovely conditions, taking us down to Fort Belan where I paused to check the live wind data from Holyhead. As we exited the Strait, we encountered a rolling swell that intensified as we ventured further over the bar, causing the sea state to deteriorate. By the time we reached Middle Sands, I decided to reassess the conditions. We were facing a 2-2.5 meter swell, which I knew would only grow larger with each race up to Holyhead.

We docked back at St. George’s Pier around 16:45, concluding our adventure.

Faced with these challenging conditions, I made the decision to turn back. Re-entering the Strait, we were treated to the delightful sight of three dolphins frolicking in Y Foryd.

We powered back to Menai Bridge, where we paused for a leisurely lunch.

Reconvening at 13:00, we embarked on our journey towards the eastern exit. The leg from Puffin to Red Wharf Bay was bumpy, but I managed to navigate close to the cliffs all the way around to Wylfa Head. Along the way, we made stops at the picturesque locations of Traeth Bychan, Moelfre, Traeth y Ora, Freshwater Bay, Porth Eilian, Amlwch Port, Bull Bay, Porth Wen, Ynys Padrig, Cemaes, and Wylfa Head.

Turning around, we began our return journey. We paused at Ynys Dulas to admire the seals before making a direct crossing across Liverpool Bay to re-enter the Strait.

We docked back at St. George’s Pier around 16:45, concluding our adventure.
